Let me tell you a little about myself… My name is Lorna Newton. I have been in radio or on stage since I was in the first grade, where my teacher wrote on my report card “talks to much”. If she could see what I do for a living now!
Through High School and College I did a lot of theatre… from drama to comedy with different characters and voices. One of my early voice announcing jobs in High School was the Daily Morning Announcements. My Senior year I even won, Imagination PlayHouse Lead Actress of the Year. (Come Back Little Sheba)
I’m very proud to say I served 8 years on Active Duty in the US Air Force. While serving I entered the base level Talent Show. At the base level over 10,000 people compete in 14 different categories around the world at all Air Force bases. I won 1st place as a Master of Ceremonies and 1st place, Musical Potpourri at the base level. I advanced to the Command Level again winning 1st place in both categories. The next level was The World Wide Talent Show. There were 250 contestants/Airman who made it to this level. With 11 other Master of Ceremonies… I won the Roger .. 1st place again! From there I was 1 of 35 selected to to tour with Air Force Entertainment TOPS IN BLUE. I was honored to be selected to tour for 2 1/2 years with TOPS IN BLUE. I’ve performed in all 50 states and 22 different countries. Working with celebrities: Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Lee Greenwood, Phylicia Rashad, Brooke Shields, Don Johnson and so many more. I toured as a vocalist my first tour and comedy my second tour. We did a 90 minute high energy non-stop show! Not only are we the performers we were also the roadies setting up and tearing down over 50,000 lbs of equipment.
In 2002 …I was honored with the highest award from Air Force Entertainment …TOPS IN BLUE with the Golden Roger. I am only the 8th woman in Air Force History to be honored as a Golden Roger Recipient.
While at my last duty station, Columbus AFB in Mississippi. I was approached by a local radio station.. WACR 103.9 .. I thought this could be fun. I worked part time for WACR 103.9 The Power Source during my last year in the Air Force. On my last day of Active Duty in Air Force I left at 4:30pm and started as a full timer at WACR at 7pm that same night. In 2 weeks I was moved to midday. Later becoming Assistant PD and Music Director.
I stayed for one year at WACR 103.9, but knew I needed to go home to be closer to my parents. I did several different radio jobs and lots of odd jobs before I landed a part time gig at the radio station I grew up listening to WHUR 96.3 in Washington DC. Part time became full time… full time became afternoon drive “Live” with Doug & Lorna. I was able to interview and work with some great artist like: Earth Wind & Fire, Alicia Keys, Jeffery Osborne, Patti LaBelle, Quincy Jones, India Arie, George Duke and so many more. As the WHUR Network grew I was given daily shows on WHUR-World 96.3 HD2 and HUR Voices SiriusXM 141.
With over 30 years in radio I have had the opportunity to do commercials for everything from McDonalds to your local Pawn Shop!
My husband and love of my life, Arthur is so supportive of everything I do. Including my advocacy work with The National MS Society and Pet Adoption . We have our two rescue cats Fred & Barney! Make Pet Adoption your first option.
I hope to be the Voice you are looking for… for your next project.. Let’s talk! 📞
